Pleased to read you are getting on great in Varanasi. The festival you wrote of was maha shiva ratri. It is the annual festival of lord shiva and is celebrated with great fan-fare especially in Varanasi as it is a shiva abode(temple).

Bodh gaya is of great importance to buddhists. YOu will see more tibetians and thai buddhists there than indian. Very close to bodh gaya is pitru-gaya. Pitru = ancestors. HIndus visit this place atleast once in their life time to pay respects and make offerings to the dead ancestors of their family.

I am glad you have fallen into the company of environmentialists and greens warriors. We could use a few more of them here.

Kolkatta is a unique experience altogether. Have you seen the movie "City of Joy"? It is not as unforgiving as Delhi. People are a lot nicer and relaxed. You will probably shocked by the number of communists there, but we have grown to like them here.

Keep us informed.

Good luck.
